A Night to Remember the Past, and Transform the Future

Oh, what a night! For the past 14 years it has been the honor of a lifetime for me to be an involved Board member of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Last Tuesday night, our Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner reminded me exactly why.

The founding principle of our museum is Remember the Past, Transform the Future. Dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Holocaust, the Museum honors the memories of those who were lost and those who survived by teaching universal lessons that combat hatred, prejudice, and indifference. The Museum fulfills its mission through the exhibition, preservation, and interpretation of its collections; and through education programs and initiatives that foster the promotion of human rights and the elimination of genocide.

I have never been prouder as I sat at the RRCM table in the Hyatt Ballroom with 2,000 other passionate and dedicated community members. The program included a tribute to Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, whose efforts to issue visas saved thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Several children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of those Survivors took the stage as a dramatic reminder of the generational impact of one Upstander's efforts.

We heard a candid conversation with actress and activist Debra Messing addressing the recent rise in antisemitism and other acts of hatred, and a dialogue covering global events between Governor JB Pritzker and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The evening was informative and inspirational.

The work of the museum is as important today as it has ever been. And with the number of Survivors dwindling before our very eyes it is our responsibility to continue to tell their stories. That is exactly what I plan to do, with pride and admiration for those who came before me and my family, and hope for those that will come after.
